The default alignment of a turnout or interlocking switch, which routes a train straight down the main line rather than diverging into a siding or branch. Signal systems and dispatching software display switches as either normal or reverse. Leaving a hand-throw switch in the reverse position after use is a severe safety violation that can lead to a derailment or misrouted train.
Make sure you line that switch back to normal and lock it before we head back to the yard.
Do not mix it up with
- Reverse: Normal routes trains straight down the main line; reverse routes them onto the diverging track.
