Relay room

nounStandard termRailroad

A secure enclosure housing the electromechanical or solid-state logic equipment that controls track signals and switches.

This dedicated space contains the vital logic hardware for an interlocking plant. It protects the sensitive relays and microprocessors that read track circuits, ensure safe routing, and prevent conflicting signal aspects. Maintainers rely on the layout inside to troubleshoot circuit failures and verify that fail-safe conditions are met before clearing a route.

Heard on the job

I need track and time through the plant so I can get into the relay room and check the contacts on that switch machine circuit.

Insider tip

On North American railroads, smaller trackside versions of these are universally called bungalows.
