A heavy steel fastener driven into a wooden tie to secure the track.

A large steel nail with an offset head used to anchor steel tie plates and rails to wooden crossties. Trackmen drive them into pre-drilled holes so the lip of the head bites down on the base of the rail, preventing the track from shifting outward under heavy trains.
