Rail trail

nounStandard termRailroad

An abandoned railway right-of-way converted into a public recreation path.

A former rail corridor where the tracks and ties have been pulled up and replaced with a paved or crushed stone surface for pedestrians and cyclists. Because trains require gentle grades and wide curves, these corridors make ideal, relatively flat public paths through otherwise difficult terrain.

Heard on the job

The old branch line up the valley was ripped out and turned into a rail trail.
