The thick, top section of a steel rail that supports the train wheels.

The upper portion of a railway rail, designed to bear the immense weight and friction of train wheels. It is shaped with a specific top radius and side angles to match the wheel flanges and treads. Over time, the rail head wears down from traffic and requires grinding or eventual replacement to maintain safe operations.
