Destination board

nounStandard termRailroad

A physical or electronic sign on a passenger car displaying its final terminal.

A destination board is a display mounted on the exterior or interior of a passenger carriage to indicate the train's final stop and sometimes its route. Historically consisting of painted metal or wooden plates slotted into brackets on the car body, they are now typically LED or LCD matrix displays. They ensure passengers board the correct train in busy stations.

Heard on the job

Make sure the destination board on the rear coach reads Chicago before we open the doors.
