Diesel multiple unit

nounStandard termRailroad

A train consisting of self-propelled passenger cars powered by onboard diesel engines.

A passenger train configuration where individual cars have their own diesel engines mounted underneath the floor, eliminating the need for a separate locomotive. The units are linked by control cables so a single engineer can operate the entire consist. They are highly efficient for low-density commuter lines and branch routes where full locomotive-hauled trains are too expensive to run.
