Coaling stage

nounStandard termRailroad

A raised platform used to load coal into the tenders of steam locomotives.

This historic facility allowed workers to shovel or dump coal directly into a locomotive tender from an elevated platform. They were common at smaller terminals or branch line depots where the volume of traffic did not justify a large mechanized tower. Coal was typically brought up an incline in small cars and held on the stage until an engine arrived.

Heard on the job

The local freight spotted two hoppers at the coaling stage before tying up for the night.
