A dedicated structure where locomotives are housed between runs for servicing, fueling and minor repairs. During the steam era, these were often built in a circular or semi-circular shape around a turntable. While standard rectangular sheds are still used for diesel maintenance, the term itself is an older designation, largely replaced by terms like shop or maintenance facility in North America.
