Dust jacket

nounStandard termPrinting

A detachable outer paper cover folded around a hardback book to protect the binding.

A dust jacket is a printed paper wrapper that wraps around the cover of a case-bound book, held in place by folded flaps resting inside the front and back boards. Originally designed simply to keep cloth bindings clean during transport, it evolved into a primary space for cover art, author biographies, and promotional blurbs.
