Dossil

nounStandard termPrinting

A cloth pad used in intaglio printing to wipe excess ink from the surface of an engraved plate.

Before passing a copperplate through the press, the printer applies ink over the entire surface to fill the engraved lines. A dossil is then used to buff the flat, non-image surface clean so that it prints paper-white, leaving the ink safely trapped in the recesses.

Heard on the job

Hand me a fresh dossil, this one is too saturated with black ink to get the plate surface perfectly clean.
