Gravure

nounStandard termPrinting

An intaglio printing process that transfers ink from microscopic cells engraved into a rotating cylinder.

A high-volume printing method where the image is engraved as tiny recessed cells on a copper-plated cylinder. The cylinder rotates through an ink bath, a doctor blade scrapes the surface clean, and the ink left in the cells transfers directly onto the paper web under high pressure. It is prized for exceptionally rich photographic reproduction and long run lengths.
