Bokashi

nounStandard termPrinting

A traditional woodblock printing technique used to create color gradations.

A specialized inking method in Japanese woodblock printing that produces a smooth fade from light to dark or between different colors. The printer achieves this effect by wiping the block with a damp cloth, applying ink selectively, and blending it with a brush before pressing the paper. It requires precise moisture control and hand-wiping for every single impression.

Heard on the job

We need a smooth bokashi on the sky block to fade the blue down into the horizon line.

Insider tip

Because the ink is blended by hand directly on the block for each sheet, no two prints with this effect are exactly identical.
