Cartridge

nounStandard termPlumbing

A self-contained, replaceable valve assembly that controls water flow and temperature inside a faucet.

A cylindrical insert used in single-handle and two-handle faucets to regulate the mixture of hot and cold water. Inside the housing, plastic or ceramic discs slide against each other to open and close the internal water ports. When a faucet drips, plumbers typically swap out the entire unit rather than replacing individual washers and O-rings.

Heard on the job

Pull the handle and swap the cartridge, but make sure you get the exact replacement or it won't seat right.

Insider tip

Always check the manufacturer and model number before pulling the part, as these are highly proprietary and a generic replacement will rarely fit.
