Lavatory

nounStandard termPlumbing

A washbasin or sink permanently installed in a bathroom for washing hands and face.

In trade terminology, a lavatory refers strictly to the bathroom sink itself, not the toilet or the room. It includes the basin, the faucet mounting holes, and the drain opening. Plumbers distinguish lavatories from kitchen sinks, utility tubs, and mop basins because they require different rough-in heights and trap sizes.

Heard on the job

The rough-in for the lavatory drain needs to be exactly 18 inches off the finished floor.

Insider tip

If a blueprint says lav, it means the sink. Do not rough in a toilet flange where the sink is supposed to go.
