Bottle trap

nounStandard termPlumbing

A compact, cylindrical plumbing trap often used under sinks to block sewer gases.

A type of plumbing trap shaped like a bottle or cylinder that retains a small seal of water to prevent sewer gases from rising out of the drain. Unlike a sweeping P-trap, a bottle trap has an internal sleeve or weir that forces water down and back up. They are frequently used in tight spaces or exposed pedestal sinks for their compact and aesthetic profile.

We're putting a chrome bottle trap under the wall-hung basin since the plumbing will be completely exposed.

Insider tip

Because of their internal baffle design, bottle traps are more prone to clogging with hair and debris than standard P-traps, so they usually have a removable base for easy cleaning.
