A thick, flanged sealing ring made of sponge rubber or synthetic elastomer that sits over the spud fitting on a toilet. It compresses between the bottom of the flush tank and the water inlet of the toilet bowl to create a watertight seal when the tank is bolted down.
Heard on the job
Make sure you seat the spud washer evenly before you tighten those tank bolts, or it will drip every time they flush.
Insider tip
Over-tightening the tank bolts to stop a leaking spud washer is a common rookie mistake that easily cracks the porcelain tank.
