Lath

nounStandard termMining

A heavy plank driven ahead of a tunnel face to support loose ground during excavation.

A thick, often pointed timber board used in soft or running ground to prevent cave-ins. Miners drive a series of laths forward over the last set of timber supports, creating a protective canopy under which they can safely excavate the next section of the tunnel.

Heard on the job

The ground is turning to mud, so we'll have to drive laths ahead of the cap before taking another cut.
