A directional term used underground to indicate movement or location away from the active mining face and toward the shaft or portal. It is the opposite of inbye. Miners use it to give precise locations along a drift or tunnel, ensuring crews know exactly where to find equipment, hazards, or other personnel.
Heard on the job
Leave the bolter about fifty feet outbye the face so the continuous miner has room to tram back.
Insider tip
Always use outbye and inbye instead of north/south or left/right underground, as tunnels constantly twist and turn.
