Excavated earth or waste rock used to construct an embankment or fill a void.

A historic term for the waste material, soil, or broken rock packed back into an excavated space or piled up to form a structural embankment. Miners and civil engineers used this fill to stabilize the ground above mined-out stopes or to build up surface infrastructure.

The old plans show they used remblai to backfill the upper cut before driving the lower level.
