Midfeather

nounStandard termMining

A historic timber or stone support built down the centerline of a tunnel.

An older mining term for a structural partition or central support pillar erected along the middle of an underground drift or tunnel. It was typically used to divide a wide tunnel into two narrower passages, either to support a weak roof or to separate intake and return ventilation air currents.

Heard on the job

The old plans show a midfeather running down the main haulage drift to split the ventilation.
