Gatewayman

nounStandard termMining

A worker responsible for maintaining the access tunnels leading to the coal face.

A traditional coal mining occupation tasked with keeping the gateways open and safe. The gatewayman rips the roof to maintain height as the floor heaves, repairs timber supports, and clears fallen rock to ensure unobstructed passage for miners and coal tubs moving to and from the working face.

Heard on the job

The roof in the main return is sagging badly, so send the gatewayman in to set some new timber before the next shift.
