Garland

nounStandard termMining

A gutter ring installed inside a mine shaft to catch and divert groundwater.

A water-collection ring built into the lining of a vertical mine shaft. It intercepts groundwater seeping from the surrounding rock before it can fall down the shaft, directing the flow into pipes that carry it to a sump for pumping. This keeps the shaft bottom dry and protects the hoisting equipment from constant water damage.
