Haulier

nounStandard termMining

A worker responsible for transporting extracted coal or ore from the working face to the main hoisting shaft.

This underground worker moves loaded tubs or cars of broken rock away from the active excavation sites. In historic operations, they guided pit ponies or manually pushed carts along the rails. In mechanized mines, the role involves operating small locomotives, conveyors, or load-haul-dump vehicles to keep the extraction cycle moving without bottlenecks.

Heard on the job

We need a haulier on level four to clear out the tubs before the next shift starts drilling.

Insider tip

In British coal mining history, this term specifically referred to the men driving the horses, distinct from the putters who pushed tubs by hand.
