An old mining term for a young worker stationed at a flat, which was a horizontal staging area where small tubs of coal were gathered. The flat lad operated cranes or managed the coupling of tubs to prepare them for haulage up an incline or out to the shaft by horses or mechanized ropes.
Heard on the job
The flat lad needs to couple those four tubs before the main rope pulls them up the drift.
