Radial shaft seal

nounStandard termMechanical

A flexible ring that presses against a rotating shaft to retain lubricant and exclude dirt.

A sealing device consisting of an elastomeric lip bonded to a metal case, often held tight against a spinning shaft by a small garter spring. It prevents oil or grease from leaking out of a bearing housing or gearbox while keeping moisture and abrasive dust out. Proper installation requires a smooth shaft finish and correct alignment to prevent the lip from burning up or grooving the metal.

Heard on the job
