Crank axle

nounStandard termMechanical

A driven axle featuring integrated cranks to convert reciprocating motion into rotation.

A specialized axle forged or built up with offset throws, allowing connecting rods to drive it directly from internal cylinders. It is an older design prominent in steam locomotives to keep the cylinders protected inside the frame while transmitting power to the driving wheels.
