Passage

nounStandard termMaritime

A navigable strait, channel, or route connecting two larger bodies of water.

A passage is a confined waterway that vessels can safely navigate to move between oceans, seas, or island chains. Navigating these narrow routes requires careful attention to tides, currents, and chart depths, as water forced through a restricted channel often creates hazardous conditions and heavy traffic bottlenecks.

Heard on the job

We need to time our run through the passage to catch the slack tide, otherwise we'll be fighting a five-knot current.
