Moving a vessel manually by pulling on oars set in oarlocks. The action requires the rower to face backward, pulling the oar handles toward the chest to sweep the blades through the water. It is the primary means of maneuvering dinghies, lifeboats, and small tenders when engines fail or are unavailable.
