NVOCC stands for non-vessel-operating common carrier. These companies act as carriers to the shipper and as shippers to the actual vessel operators. They issue their own bills of lading and assume responsibility for the shipment, making their money by buying large blocks of container space at a discount and reselling it in smaller increments.
We booked the container through an NVOCC because they offered a better rate for a less-than-container load.
