Overlanded

adjectiveStandard termMaritime

Describes cargo that arrives at a port in quantities exceeding what is listed on the ship's manifest.

When a vessel discharges more units of a specific cargo than were officially declared on the bill of lading, the excess is declared overlanded. This discrepancy triggers customs and administrative headaches, as the terminal must hold the undocumented freight until the shipping line resolves the paperwork error or traces the origin of the extra goods.

Heard on the job

We expected 400 pallets of tile, but the tally shows 412, so we have 12 overlanded pallets sitting in the shed.

Insider tip

Overlanded cargo often means another port was short-shipped on a previous stop.
