Jeer

nounStandard termMaritime

A heavy tackle used for hoisting or lowering the lower yards on a square-rigged ship.

A heavy-duty block and tackle system rigged to the lower yards of a traditional sailing ship. Unlike the lighter halyards used for upper sails, jeers handle the massive weight of the main or fore yard, allowing the crew to lift it into position or lower it to the deck for repairs or heavy weather.
