Jib

nounStandard termMaritime

A triangular sail set forward of the foremost mast on a sailing vessel.

A triangular headsail rigged on a stay extending from the foremast down to the bowsprit or the bow of the vessel. The jib helps balance the boat by moving the center of effort forward, and it funnels air into the mainsail to increase overall aerodynamic efficiency. Larger vessels may fly multiple jibs, such as an inner jib and a flying jib.
