Jam

verbStandard termMaritime

To steer a sailing vessel so close to the wind that the upper sails are pushed backward.

To pinch or steer a square-rigged vessel too high into the wind, causing the wind to catch the forward side of the upper sails. This lays the sails aback, killing the ship's forward momentum and risking a dangerous stall or backward drift. It usually happens through helmsman error or a sudden wind shift.
