Inducement

nounStandard termMaritime

The minimum cargo volume required to justify a ship making an unscheduled port call.

A commercial threshold in tramp or chartered shipping where a vessel diverts from its planned route to pick up or drop off cargo. The cargo offered must be large or lucrative enough to cover the extra fuel, port dues, and time lost by the deviation. If a port is listed as subject to inducement, the carrier will only stop there if enough shippers book space.
