Molding flash

nounStandard termProduction

A thin layer of excess material forced out of a mold cavity at the parting line.

When liquid plastic or molten metal is injected into a mold under high pressure, a small amount often escapes through the seam where the mold halves meet. This creates a thin, unwanted fin on the finished part. Operators must remove it using a manual trimming process or automated deflashing equipment.

Heard on the job

We're getting heavy molding flash on the left side of the casing, so check the clamping pressure on the press.
