Racetracking

nounStandard termProduction

A molding defect where liquid resin flows too quickly around the edges of a mold cavity.

A fluid dynamics issue in composite manufacturing where injected resin takes the path of least resistance along the edges of a mold instead of saturating the reinforcing material. This creates dry spots and air voids in the center of the finished part. It severely compromises the structural integrity of the component and usually results in scrap.

Heard on the job

We're getting racetracking on the left side of the panel, so we need to adjust the injection pressure and check the seal.

Insider tip

Racetracking is almost always caused by poor fit between the preform and the mold edges, leaving a gap for the resin to rush through.
