Break edges

phraseStandard termMachine Shop

A drawing note requiring sharp corners to be slightly chamfered or rounded, usually within a small range.

A standard instruction, often written as break all sharp edges with a size range such as 0.005 to 0.015 in, telling the machinist to remove the knife edge left at the intersection of surfaces. It improves handling safety, prevents chipping and helps assembly. Breaking an edge too heavily violates the note just as leaving it sharp does.

Heard on the job

Print says break edges five to fifteen thou, so a quick pass with the chamfer mill, not a big bevel.
