To remove the sharp raised edges and slivers that machining leaves on a part.

Removing burrs, the thin ridges of displaced metal left at edges, hole exits and thread starts, with files, deburring tools, scrapers, abrasive wheels, tumblers or a chamfer pass in the program. Burrs cut hands, prevent parts from seating, upset measurements and can break off inside assemblies. Most drawings carry a note requiring all edges to be deburred.
