Aflaj

nounStandard termFarming

A traditional Middle Eastern irrigation system that channels groundwater to crops via gravity.

This historic water management system relies on gently sloping underground tunnels to tap into mountain aquifers and direct water to arid farming communities. Surface channels then distribute the flow among different plots based on strict communal water rights. The design minimizes evaporation in extreme heat and requires no mechanical pumping.
