Barnyard

nounStandard termFarming

The enclosed or heavily trafficked area of ground immediately surrounding a barn.

This transitional zone serves as a staging area for moving equipment, loading livestock, and handling manure. Because of the constant foot and vehicle traffic, it is often compacted, paved, or covered in gravel to prevent it from turning into deep mud. It acts as the operational hub connecting the pasture, the road, and the interior of the farm buildings.

Heard on the job

Keep the gates to the barnyard closed so the calves don't wander out onto the main driveway.
