Thermal horsepower

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

The effective mechanical output rating of a motor based on its heat dissipation limits.

A rating that defines the maximum continuous power a motor can deliver without exceeding its safe operating temperature. It is derived from the thermal limits of the motor insulation and cooling system rather than just its electrical or mechanical breakdown limits. Running a motor beyond this rating causes rapid insulation degradation.

Heard on the job

The mechanical load is fine, but the thermal horsepower drops significantly when you run it at low speeds without forced cooling.
