Induction motor

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

An alternating current motor where the rotor current is induced by the magnetic field of the stator.

An asynchronous electric machine that relies on electromagnetic induction to generate torque, rather than using direct electrical connections to the spinning rotor. The stator creates a rotating magnetic field that induces a current in the rotor windings or bars. Because they have no brushes or commutators to wear out, they are the most common workhorse in industrial environments.
