IPM

abbreviationStandard termElectrotechnology

An interior permanent magnet motor has its magnetic materials embedded inside the rotor structure.

An interior permanent magnet motor is a synchronous machine where the rare-earth magnets are buried deep within the steel laminations of the rotor rather than mounted on the surface. This design protects the magnets from centrifugal forces at high speeds and provides additional reluctance torque. They are widely used in traction applications and high-efficiency industrial drives.

Heard on the job

We selected an IPM design for the main drive because it offers a wider constant power speed range than a surface magnet motor.
