Thunderbolt chassis

nounStandard termElectronics

An external enclosure that allows desktop expansion cards to connect to a computer via Thunderbolt.

A Thunderbolt chassis is a standalone housing equipped with a power supply and internal PCI Express slots, bridging the PCIe bus to a host computer over a Thunderbolt cable. This allows laptops or compact computers lacking internal expansion room to utilize full-sized desktop graphics cards, high-end audio interfaces, or specialized capture cards.
