VA

abbreviationStandard termElectronics

A type of liquid crystal display where the crystals naturally align vertically to the glass substrates.

Vertical Alignment (VA) is an LCD technology known for blocking light highly effectively when in its off state. When voltage is applied, the liquid crystals tilt to allow light through. This gives VA panels much deeper blacks and higher contrast ratios than IPS or TN panels, though they often suffer from slower pixel response times and narrower viewing angles.

Heard on the job

We chose a VA panel for the medical monitor because the deep blacks make the contrast on the X-rays much clearer.
