IPS stands for in-plane switching, a type of active-matrix LCD where the liquid crystals align parallel to the glass substrates. This horizontal alignment prevents the color shifting and contrast degradation seen in older twisted nematic panels when viewed from off-center angles.
We specified an IPS panel for the medical monitor because the surgeon needs perfect color accuracy from any angle.
IPS panels require stronger backlights than TN panels because their electrode arrangement blocks more light.
