Calligraphic projection

nounStandard termElectronics

A display method where an electron beam or laser directly draws lines rather than scanning a raster grid.

A technique for generating images by steering a beam of light or electrons directly along the paths of the shapes being drawn. Unlike a raster display that sweeps line by line across the entire screen, a calligraphic system only traces the lit portions of the image. This approach was common in early radar displays, oscilloscopes, and vector arcade monitors.

Heard on the job

The old vector monitor uses calligraphic projection to draw those incredibly sharp, bright lines without any pixel aliasing.
