CRT

abbreviationStandard termElectronics

A cathode-ray tube is a vacuum envelope containing an electron gun and a phosphorescent screen.

This historic display technology works by firing a focused beam of electrons at a phosphor-coated glass face. Magnetic deflection coils sweep the beam rapidly across the screen in a raster pattern to draw images. Though bulky and power-hungry, they are still prized in specific retro-gaming and legacy industrial systems for their zero input lag and natural motion handling.

Be careful discharging that old CRT before you pull the chassis, the anode cap holds a massive charge.
