An active-matrix electrophoretic display uses a thin-film transistor array to control electronic ink pixels.

Active-matrix electrophoretic display is a type of e-paper technology where each pixel of electronic ink is controlled by its own dedicated thin-film transistor. This active matrix allows for faster refresh rates and higher resolution compared to passive matrix displays, because the transistor holds the charge state of the pixel while other pixels are being updated. It is the underlying technology for most commercial e-readers and low-power signage.

Heard on the job

We're sourcing a 6-inch AMEPD panel for the new device because the passive matrix version ghosts too much during page turns.

Insider tip

The active matrix backplane is what prevents severe ghosting and allows for the crisp text rendering required by dedicated reading devices.
